The True Adventures of Charley Darwin

30 05 2009

Some of you don’t like historical fiction, but you really should try reading a book or two. Carolyn Meyer mainly writes historical fiction, and she produces wonderful novels.

Have you ever heard of Charles Darwin?  If you have, it may have been in science class and you may have some predetermined ideas about this man from what others have told you about his studies. When you read this book, you will come away with an entirely different picture of Charley Darwin – at least I did. The author has written this in first person as a journal so the reader feels like he is getting to know Charley.

Charley Darwin wasn’t a stuffy scientist who was consumed by academic studies. Actually, he really was not a great student in school. He did love nature and history, and he loved hunting with his uncle, Jos Wedgewood. Darwin’s father believed his son should follow in his footsteps and become a doctor. When this does not work, he suggests that his son become a clergyman. Before Charley begins studying for the clergy, he is offered a place on The Beagle. This ship was used for survey expeditions. This adventure is a 5 year journey that will lead Charley to make observations that continue to be debated today.

Laurie Halse Anderson has written another book that is sure to captivate many of you, just as her other novels – Speak and Fever 1793.

Lia and Cassie have been best friends since they were little girls and they did everything together – even starving themselves. Lia is an anorexic and Cassie a bulimic. They challenged each  other to a competition as who could be the thinnest.

Now Cassie is dead, and Lia is living (or maybe dying) with guilt. Lia takes the readers with her on her journey into the depths of anorexia.

This book is not for everyone, but it does present a riveting account of a young woman suffering from a deadly illness.

Kissed by an Angel Elizabeth Chandler

“Kissed by an Angel” is about (you guessed it) angels! Only they aren’t the type of angel you would normally think of. These angels are not up high and they don’t have wings! The most accurate description of these angels is ghosts with special “powers”.

When Ivy’s mom decides to marry super rich Andrew, this is fine with Ivy accept for one complication; Andrew has a son the same age as Ivy. His name is Gregory. And Gregory is not nice at all. He is a downright spoiled brat. Gregory is mean to Ivy’s little brother Philip. Philip and Ivy share a strong belief in angels.

Then Ivy’s whole world came crashing down.  Ivy and her boyfriend were driving and a deer appears! But, Tristan, Ivy’s boyfriend, can’t stop. She didn’t realize it yet, but the cars brakes had failed. And Tristan was pronounced dead on the scene. Before Tristan’s death Tristan told Ivy that he loved her. But Ivy couldn’t find the courage to voice her feelings of love to Tristan. . .

Now Tristan finds that he is dead. He is an angel from heaven sent to help Ivy. He tries to talk to Ivy, but she pushes him away. She has lost her belief in angels. Tristan knows that someone cut the brake line in his car. And the killer wanted Ivy dead, not Tristan… the killer could strike any day. And if Ivy continues to push him away in her mind, there might be no hope left for Ivy’s safety.
